How a Homeowner With Water on the Floor Actually Chooses a Plumber

They are not comparing quotes. They are scrolling, tapping the first credible result, and calling until someone answers. The campaign has to win that ten-second decision — and then convert the planned jobs that pay the bills.

Segment B · Service & replacement. Priority markets: FL, NC, VA, NJ, PA, GA, MA.

01

Market reality

What actually decides who wins plumbing jobs in a local market.

Reality 01

A burst pipe or a backed-up main is a stop-everything event. The homeowner taps the first three results, calls until a human answers, and books whoever can come now. Star rating and “open now” beat price entirely in that moment.

Reality 02

Planned work — a repipe, a tankless upgrade, a sewer line — is the opposite: a considered purchase researched over days, shaped by financing and by whether the sewer scope video actually showed them the problem.

Reality 03

Plumbing has the widest job-value spread of any service trade, from a $180 clog to a $14,000 repipe. A campaign that treats them the same wastes money on both ends.

Plumbing acquisition economics

Emergency and planned plumbing work sit at opposite ends of the same phone line. The campaign separates them so budget follows behaviour.

02

Two buyers, one phone number

The emergency buyer behaves almost reflexively. There is no funnel — there is a map pack, a rating, an “open now” label and a tap-to-call. The entire job of marketing is to be present, credible and answered at that instant. Lose the first ring and you lose the job.

The planned buyer is patient and skeptical. A repipe or a sewer replacement is disruptive and expensive, so they read reviews, ask for a camera inspection, and want to understand what they are paying for. Here the sewer scope video, a clear scope of work and a financing option do the selling — and the company that follows up after the estimate wins.

03

Channel fit

Which channels earn their budget in this trade, and why.

ChannelFitWhy
Local Services AdsPrimaryOwns the emergency map pack on a pay-per-lead basis and screens for legitimacy, which matters when the buyer is filtering on trust.
Google SearchPrimaryCaptures both “emergency plumber near me” and high-value “whole house repipe / tankless installation” research.
SEO & Google BusinessCore baseReviews and proximity drive the map pack; this compounds and lowers blended cost per booked job over time.
Meta AdsLimitedPoor at catching an active emergency; useful mainly for repipe/water-treatment offers to homeowners in older housing stock.
04

The offer that converts

For emergencies, the offer is availability and a fixed diagnostic fee, not a coupon. “Answered live, plumber dispatched today, upfront flat-rate pricing” converts the panic call better than any discount. For planned work, the offer is a free camera inspection or a free in-home estimate with financing, because the homeowner wants to see the problem before they authorize a five-figure fix.

05

The number that decides everything

In plumbing, booked-call rate — the share of ad-driven calls your office actually converts to a scheduled job — matters more than cost per lead. A campaign at $40 per call that books 30% is losing to a campaign at $60 per call that books 65%. Most plumbing companies have never measured it, which is why we instrument it first.

06

What owners tell us

The objections we hear from contractors in this trade — and the honest answer.

My guys are booked. I do not need more $89 drain calls.

Then we do not sell $89 drain calls. We can weight the campaign toward repipes, water heaters and sewer work, use the ad angle and qualification to filter low-value calls, and treat drains as a foot-in-the-door for higher-ticket inspections rather than the main event.

Leads call the shop and my CSR does not close them.

Common, and fixable. Marketing that stops at the ring is half a system. We add call tracking and call review so you can hear where booked jobs are being lost, and a follow-up sequence for estimates that go quiet — that is usually where the biggest recovered revenue sits.

Everyone claims to be #1 with five stars. How do I stand out?

You stand out on specifics, not adjectives. Named neighborhoods, real response commitments, a camera-inspection offer and genuine reviews outperform superlatives. We build the message around what you actually do differently, which is also what survives an honest comparison.

We speak the trade

A campaign written by someone who has never worked in plumbing reads like an outsider on the first line. We build the language of the trade into the ads, pages and qualification, because the homeowner and the estimator both notice.

Plumbing marketing questions

Do you focus on emergency work or big-ticket jobs?

Both, deliberately separated. Emergency work fills the schedule and feeds reviews; repipes, water heaters and sewer replacements carry the margin. We build distinct paths so budget follows the work you want more of.

How important are reviews for plumbing ads?

Critical. The emergency buyer filters the map pack on rating before they read anything. We build review generation into the follow-up so your paid presence is backed by the social proof buyers actually screen on.

Can you track which ads produce booked jobs, not just calls?

Yes, and it is the first thing we set up. Call tracking and call review tie spend to booked jobs so you stop optimizing for cheap calls that never schedule.

We serve a big metro. Can you target by neighborhood?

Yes. We target by service area and job type, and we can bias toward the ZIP codes with the housing stock most likely to need repipes, sewer work or water treatment.

Is Local Services Ads worth it for plumbers?

In most markets, yes — it owns the emergency map pack on a pay-per-lead basis and Google screens the listings, which helps with the trust filter. We usually run it alongside Search rather than instead of it.

What is in it

  1. 01A scan of the three to five contractors currently buying attention in your market
  2. 02The homeowner offer we would put in front of that market, and why that one
  3. 03One complete ad concept - hook, angle, headline, primary text and creative direction
  4. 04The channel, targeting and daily budget it needs to produce usable data
  5. 05The landing page it should point at, section by section
  6. 06The qualification questions that separate a job from a tyre-kicker
  7. 07The follow-up sequence for the first 72 hours after a lead arrives
  8. 08What it would cost to have Celer build and run it

What it is not. It is not a live campaign, a finished creative package, free media management, or an audit of your existing ads. It is the plan. You are free to take it and build it yourself.
