Checklist
The Contractor Website Conversion Checklist
Your website is the first thing a homeowner checks after they hear your name. Here is the checklist that decides whether it wins the job or loses it.
Speed and mobile come first
Most contractor traffic is on a phone, and a slow page loses leads before anyone reads a word. If your site takes more than a couple of seconds to load, you are paying for clicks that bounce. Fast, mobile-first performance is not a nicety — it is the floor everything else stands on.
- Loads in under two seconds on mobile
- Tap-to-call visible without scrolling
- Forms usable one-handed on a phone
- No layout shift as the page loads
Trust in the first screen
A homeowner comparing three companies picks the one that feels safe. Reviews, real project photos, service-area proof, licensing and guarantees have to appear where doubt shows up — near the top and beside every call to action, not buried on an About page.
- Star rating and review count near the top
- Real project photography, not stock
- Licensing, insurance and guarantees stated plainly
- Service area made obvious
One obvious next step
Every page should make the next action unmistakable: book, call or request a quote. Competing links and cluttered navigation dilute intent. Decide the single most valuable action and make it the loudest thing on the page.
- One primary call to action, repeated
- Phone number clickable everywhere
- A short, low-friction quote form
- No dead ends — every page routes toward contact
Copy that speaks to the decision
Homeowners are not buying "quality workmanship and competitive prices." They are buying a specific outcome and reassurance about a specific fear. Write to the decision they are actually making — the leak they need stopped, the kitchen they have been picturing, the storm damage they need handled with the insurer.
Measure what the site produces
You cannot improve what you cannot see. Track form submissions, calls and quote requests, tie them to source, and watch where visitors drop. A site with no conversion tracking is a site you are improving by guesswork.

Questions
What is the single biggest conversion killer?
Speed. A slow, heavy page loses leads before trust or copy ever get a chance. Fix performance first, then trust signals and a clear call to action.
How many calls to action should a page have?
One primary action, repeated as the reader scrolls. Multiple competing actions dilute intent and make it harder to measure what works.
